Links aplenty

Just reading my RSS and found that TallSkinnyKiwi linked me today...thanks! Thanksforlinks 1 To check out his site go to the "elationships" tab bar on the right hand side. He's definatly got his finger on the pulse of new Church movements and is involved in the BOAZ project. he lives in Orkney with his wife and 3 (i think) children, Ive met him a couple of times, in Orkney then in Aberdeen and more than him being an emergent church leader being the motivation for you to visit his blog, he's just a down to earth missionally minded kiwi, so theres a better reason for you to read his blog. In other link related news, a few inactive blogs have been taken off my side bar and a few new ones in the friends bar have been added. As I mentioned the other day now our whole house is blogging so go see Fraser over at My adventures in communication, and Jacko the sound/bass/guitar king (hes a great guy as well as being a king at those forementioned things) at A Dynamic New Sound

I Invented (Adapted) a new Bagel!

I was thinking this evening as I spread the peanut butter on one side of my tesco organic bagel and then proceed to spread the other side with jam, how the bagel could be more useful....let me explain: Whenever I spread anything on a bagel (which has happened a lot recently as we like bagels here at the Lads residence and we found them on offer at tesco for 20p for a pack of 6, so froze them!...what thrifty young individuals we are!) more ends up going down the hole in the middle than I managed to master sculpt around the bagel!

Bread-Bagel

So Fraser (doing the dishes standing next to me) says: "Maybe they should make bagels that dont have holes"...."ahh"I thought "but the problem is bagel really isnt a bagel without a hole, and for all its troublesome qualities, it does give the bagelits distinctive character, so what you need is a bagel with a push out hole!...And there it was my moment of genius, on Monday the 28th of November in the year 2005 the removable hole bagel was formed. Yo spread your chosen ingredient on the bagel as easy as a piece of toast and then just push it out...the perfect bagel. Now to find some investment capital and make this baby fly!

Camera Phone

I took this photo on my way into Uni a few weeks back...I cant believe how well it came out! Technology these days eh! I dont know.... The effect of writing in the sky works alot better on a little camera phone screen but you get the idea. I thought Id post it up here to try and claim some kind of artistic nature as it was dropkicked by my flatmate fraser who threw away my toilet signs saying they just weren't aesthetically pleasing! Other than that I still havent written my paper on Stanley Hauerwas, and am considering watching "Kingdom of Heaven (2 Discs) [2005]" (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment) before I do, though I probably shouldn't cause I think Im going to hang out with the guys who just got back from Orkney and a friend who lives in Edinburgh who works for Fusion called Joy Lyth, her brother plays guitar and has released a CD I was hooked on by the end of the summer check it out Dan Lyth Listening to: Criminal from the album "Sounding A Mosaic" by Bedouin Soundclash

Wi-Fi in Mountain View

This is very cool, imagine if they did something like this throughout London. I had heard on the grapevine that they were going to do this in L.A. but maybe I heard wrong. Wi-Fi in Mountain View:
"There have been reports that Google plans to unwire the world with free Wi-Fi. In fact, though, our plan is a lot simpler: to provide free Wi-Fi to the city of Mountain View, where we're headquartered. Inside Google, people think this is a plot to make sure our Mountain View employees never stop working -- but it's actually a community outreach program. We plan to build something exciting here now that the city has approved our proposal. As I wrote in my letter to the City Council, wireless broadband has huge potential to provide inexpensive access to the Internet. Instead of trenching fiber, wireless broadband requires a bucket truck, a lamppost, and 5 minutes of installation. So look for me in a bucket truck soon!"
So my comment on this is I think it'll be the way for internet, alot of people are sceptical about Wi-fi and wireless networking in general but we have it running in our house right now and its definatly useful. My Uni also offers it free in all their buildings to students. The only bugging thing is wifi in shops etc, for example in Starbucks in Aberdeen it cost like £5 for an hour!! Crazy....anyway a nice place in Aberdeen called Kilau does free wifi with a purchase!

RSS readers out of context

I was just reading my RSS Feeds when I forgot whose posts I was reading!...and it made me think about the future of RSS, sure there really helpful for having mulitple blogs notify you when they post a new post. But at the end of the day your just reading it like text on a white background. Most blogs are very distinctive in the way there set out and there layout, and so when you read a post its a lot easier to read it in context, straight after the other posts, and in light of the links and stuff on the side of the page that influences the blog. Anyway....just a thought. Read Blogs on the page if you have time!

Anyway Lucy sent me some back and so its like gold dust cant ou see the glow of worthiness around the bottle.
Not sure when Im going to drink it but Im definatly going to save it for a special occasion...Thanks Lucy Bersey, have a good Gap year

Finally the braces are off

Originally uploaded by Byrnesyliam.

Well....BIG BIG news for all of you who know me in the real world, as the majority of you have probably only known me with braces as Ive had them since the end of 2000...thats around 4 years can you believe it. Were equally blessed and cursed in the UK with NHS treatment that we dont have to pay for but can be absolutly rubbish sometimes. Anyway Ive put up a pic for those of you currently not magnetised into the North East Scotland. I look a little scared eh!....well I had a bit of a self concious moment at taking photos of my self while wrenching my mouth open so you can see my (not quite) straight teeth. Anyway now I have a retainer so its not all as perfect as it may seem, in fact the retainer is a knightmare as I have to wear it all the time, apart from brushing my teeth and it is uber intrusive, with only a small bar but a massive plate that constricts my mouth to like 1/3 of the size, so Im needing some speech therapy (come home soon Jane, dont get stuck on orkney with those storms). Anyway I should only have the retainer for about 6months so then Ill be finished! Woo

New Blog on the block

Well now officially all members of the house where I currently reside are bloggers! John has been blogging for a while over at On the Road and is re-emerging after a period of inexcusable slackness, and the newest edition to the Blogger family is artiste in Chief flatmate Fraser Scott, He called it Adventures in Communication, but I think he should have called it "Is Art Worship?"

The Fugees Come back

Would you believe, legendary Hip Hop Band "The Fugees" who brought us those soundtracks to the 90's, "Ready or Not" and "Fugee-La" are back together and in the studio recording a new album. From the marked change in at least Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean (who seems to have been gone for longer than just til November!) I reckon this album will sound considerably different than their last release "The Score".

Byrnesys News Round up

Can you tell by my major blogging that I got a new piece of blogging software and a new RSS Client! -> UK cinemas enjoy box office high: More people went to UK and Ireland cinemas last weekend than at any point in the last 20 years, a trade group says. Thats Crazy I didnt even realise there was anything good on! 24 Hr Alcohol Laws Pubs and clubs will be able to serve alcohol round the clock when new laws come into force at midnight. Controversially maybe, I dont think this is toomuch of a problem, I cant see it drastically increasing alcoholism as if your going to get Drunk you will just buy drinks before closing time!

Entire Governmental cabinet of Kenya dismissed! Kenya's president dismisses his entire cabinet after losing a referendum on a draft constitution. Well my politics days are over, but it dosen't take a political scientist to work out that this was major!

Also in non BBC news, my friends Rachel and Jane are driving up to Orkney for a trip to see Jane's Parents, heres hoping they dont get stuck in some blizzard on the way up to Scrabster.

Craigs getting healed

Thanks for all your prayers as you can read below Craig's appointment went really well, Please keep praying for his continual healing...he's the man! Hey y'all,

Good news guys! I don't need to get the operation. They are pretty satisfied with my nerve recovery.

I had two appointments today. One with my physio who is in charge of regenerating my nerve and an ear/nerve specialist. The physio hooked me up to her machine and it read all of my nerves power and showed that there has been a marked improvement since she game me this electrode maching to use everyday for an hour(known as the iPod in my family) My nerves function was sitting at 6.8% and now it's upto 37.6%. In regeneration terms..... that's awesome for just 4months physio! The scary thing was that the ear/nerve specialist had booked me into to get the operation last week. I felt abit worried that he wanted to do an operation before he had all the medical facts. Kinda got me thinking......... what the snot?!!

My ear is looking good and he is pleased with it, no infection or anything. I'm getting a tiny gold weight put into my eye lid to help it close tighter to protect my eye though. That's a piece of cake, in and out in light 10mins, no need to get knocked out or anything. Woohoo!

So all in all it's been a great day. Thanks for all your prayers. Big up G!!

Hint: Listen to Bedouin Soundclash

When I was over in Arizona this last summer I went to Warped Tour 05, somewhat of a crazy affair for my mature head (@ the grand old age of 20) full of Alt, and emo bands, and some bands from my younger days like "The Offspring". But I happened to be at one of the stages to see Bedouin Soundclash, so I got hold of some of their music, and they are as good as I remember them! Kind of a Reggae, Drum&Bass, Rock, cant really describe them type of band, but they have been at the top of my iTunes playlist recently so go check them out they just released a new album!

"Sounding Amosaic" (Bedouin Soundclash)

Right now Im listening to: Rude Boy Don't Cry from the album "Sounding A Mosaic" by Bedouin Soundclash

Pray for Craig

I read this on Craigs MySpace today, and you can only get to it if your a member of myspace so I thought Id put it up on here so you can all pray for my good friend that he would get 100% better and be able to get on with living life!

317056832 M

Well, tomorrow is judgement day for me. I find out if I have to get another operation on my ear tomorrow. Most of you all know the recent carrying on i've had in hospital of late. My facial nerve isn't recovering so well and it is bringing up the question of "will it ever regain any function without an operation?"

For those of you who don't know the whole story. I basically had a tumour like growth behind my ear and it wrapped itself around my facial nerve and squeezed the hell out of it until it got badly damaged. I didn't have any symptoms of this, so it got picked up by chance. I was really lucky as it eventually developes into brain disease. The effects of the damage is that the right side of my face is only functioning at about 10-20% causing me to look like quazimodo! hehehe.

I'm seeing the specialist tomorrow who says he can to a nerve transplant by going through me ear. (I didn't know you could do that, but you can) The specialist takes a nerve from my neck, cuts out the damaged part of the nerve in my face and slaps in the new piece. Apparently, the nerve gap left in the neck means i'll lose slight feeling for a short time because it will regenerate itself, whereas my facial nerve is beyond the regeneration stage.

So guys, can you keep me in your prayers tomorrow. I'd rather swim with sharks whilst being nibbled at by parranas in a lake of lava than go into hospital again. I hate the place. I'll update you all when I get home tomorrow. Peace out. Leave your comments for him

Questions for mac Blogger/users

I’ve spent the morning moving Photos and music over to my iBook (see last post). I looked everywhere yesterday for a 12” laptop case and couldn’t find anything at your regular outlets like PC world or Dixon’s but found one in John Lewis in Aberdeen which I wasn’t expecting at all, I always though John Lewis was really overpriced but it was good value and they had a monopoly (in that they were the only outlet to sell them) in 12” notebook cases. While I was in their computer section I also saw that they kept a really healthy stock of Macs, some absolute beasts, probably at RRP of apple.com too! So anyway a few requests today for the replies, I got a great comment from Andy over at Servant Blog – to all nations which recommending Mac journal as a good offline blog editor, well I’m going to check it out today along with ecto blog which is endlessly appraised by Andrew at TSK. Anybody got any other good ideas? I know I’m slack not to just use the WYSIWYG editor but Ill probably be doing a good bit of blogging on the bus these days. Also what are the mac places to be online so to speak, I know there are loads of sites like mac user etc. But what’s the one to keep an eye on? Also anyone who has Mac OSX know of any really handy widgets for the dashboard? Sorry all you non Mac users you can click back into reality now. Listening to U2 – Vertigo Just as Im leaving I LOVE this line “Your Love is teaching me how to kneel” PS Im posting this trying out ecto, quite impressed though noticed the website says they ar having some problems posting to blogger...well im not finding any yet!

relevant podcasting

Well I’ve had a nice slack morning, catching up from my nightmare Monday lack of sleep when I went bed at 12:30am and got up at 5ish to get into Uni. So its nice to re-cooperate. Just listened to this weeks edition of relevant podcast which you can get at the website or aggregate it through iTunes like I do. Its not going to change your life but it’s a nice enough podcast to listen to in the morning on the bus! Todays topic is Missiology at Uni so that should be good, Im teaching tonight at the “Closer group” on the Holy Spirit

Before I go to bed tonight

I have somewhat of a technological bombshock for all you geeks out there. I just entered the world of MAC. I am officially a switcher (what they call people who switch from Windows to Mac) but fear not my Bill Gates related friends, My home desktop still runs Windows XP (never mind that it crashes every 5 seconds!) So I may be looking at running into some compatibility issues here. Anyway I'm very excited and its very nice, I'm sure to be , as blogging a lot more in the near future with it too, as I'm going to try out the highly acclaimed EctoBlog offline blog editor for Mac (even though they tried a Windows version) and also Wifi in Starbucks, Airports etc! How did I end up with a mac....well due to their simply brilliant marketing and product design I've really like them, I also have played with a few in the past months and really enjoyed them, namely Scott Gibsons and Careen McRoberts, and they were since and just in my price budget. Quietly pleased with my new technology What I was really looking forward to (in order than I didn't have to go through the paradigm shift I'm currently experiencing) was an IBM 12" Laptop but they were just too over priced. So I had a trawl through the halls of eBay for an apple, and here we go, I'm typing on my 12" iBook right now!!! I'm also pretty stoked that I didn't get completely ripped off, its given me much more faith in the eBay process (which was jolted when the postage for some items I sold were more than the whole sale!...gutting) OH, I had intended to fill this with links to the respective fokes, and companies but it looks like Safari (Apple's version of Internet Explorer) dosent support some of the functions on Blogger WYSIWYG editor. So for now just a couple of complimetary pictures IMG_6135.JPG

Lost, creating community or escapism

A new event has begun in our house, for the last week, everynight, I mean everynight a group of us....no, no lets jump back. A while back in Relevant I read about a TV show in the states called "LOST", well we dont have a TV so even when it did come over to the UK I thought I was missing out on what seemed to be a really interesting show. So when we got our nice Wifi 2MB Internet connection installed, I thought Id get hold of the pilot episode. It was really good, it presses all my buttons in terms of TV shows, it has a great social dimension, it comments on wider society, looks at human nature, great cinematogprahy, very intelligent plot line, good directing. Well Im only a few episodes in so it might turn bad but just now Im loving it. Im on to Series 1 episode 6. Its also turning out to be a great social event, being the highlights of most of our days, whether were working in cafe's, doing admin at church, living on a bus to Uni, or working at a furniture store...there is hope, in the LOST episode at the end of the day. Now I if I was to analyze this too hard, Im sure Id say we escape our safe western lives in the evening and live an adventure through the computer screen. Your right maybe Ill just retreat from that pessimistic view and realise its just good harmless fun. Anyway, at this point I well recommend LOST, a thought provoking drama!

Blog Run Down of the week

Well, here we are at the end of the week, and simply Im doing so much theology right now, I want to blog about anything but that. But Im reading Resident Aliens still which is an interesting read that I'd recommend, you can read my post on the first chapter here So, Im just going to point out some other things on the Blogosphere you may want to check out: Re-emerging Blog: His blog kind of died after he finished his degree, but there are rumours of internet access abounding over the weekend and a blogging revival over at my friend John's blog which was great whilew it was going "On the Road" Why did I ever stop reading: My Great friend Sam Rich has been Blogging his adventure, Ive got some catching up to do, also he has some great flickr stuff Blogging less this week: Also somewhat Ironic, my blogging idols (joke, but just bloggers I look up to) Andrew Jones and Arlen Hanson are both blogging about how they need to blog less, this is not a problem I am faced with on the face of it, but I definatly respect Andrew for putting his family over his blog, sign of a good man. Arlen also makes some interesting points through Thomas Merton about being less open, and in a way I think I agree with him. I am always an advocate for accountability and transparency but can blogs be a space for wingeing or even worse self display, Ill let you tie up those ends Arlen! Help me out:

This Modern Love

If this works, this will be the first time Ive sucessfully blogged from my cell phone!

In my recent sucumbings to ebay fever I bought a small bluetooth keyboard (a Nokia SU-8W for all the geeks out there) and have been happily tapping out emails and text messe]ages on my daily commute from Aberdeen (Scotland, UK) to Fraserburgh which takes around 1hr30 then a shorter 20 min ride to a village called st combs.

The wonders of modern technology then that I can watch, yes watch the news, the weather, surf the net, send emails and schedule my life on my phone.

As Napolean Dynamite once said: "I love Technology..." and I always have, from the day the guy came to fix our first PC when I was about 13 and I pointed asking "whats that" and "what does it do" and "why is that connected to that", even before when I would turn my sega megadrive cartridges upside down and blow in them to get them to work, and wonder at what could be contained in the chip inside it.

The problem has really been that conceptually Ive enjoyed the prospect and the possiblities of technology but I never had the money (or social inablility) to fully actualize the use of it.

Much like blogging really, Ive always seen the potential, and the great concepts it contains but never utilized them for my own good.

So maybe this (Blogging on a bus) is one step closer to doing that, using technolgy for its function instead of its concept.

I think as Church as well we've taught conceptualizing as seperate from actualizing, and so kept the Church from realising, because unlike the geekiness of technology, Church doesn't require money or social inability to understand or to play the game. We've been mad at church congregations and Christians for not being missionally minded, communicating to them that they are missing the point, while at the same time, saying that in order to be sucessful or to be a "good Christian" we have to know before we go.

This isnt a blog against theology, I chose to study theology, or at discipling/feeding congregations but that we sometime try and clean people up before we send them out, and then mission becomes foreign to them, something they force, something they perform at, when what it was meant to be all along was telling the people around you the good news.

Is this right? Or should we send every convert to seminary before they speak to another non Christian.

It seems to me that the way Jesus discipled the 12 was to hit the ground running, let them make a few mistakes but give the space to live out what they were learning.

I can be way too afraid of making mistakes, and can be far too judgemental of other people who make mistakes when Jesus is maybe just saying walk out what you know in the best way you can, because obedience is the highest form of Worship. Today I want to not just learn to tolerate people and their mistakes but love them for them, for what God has put into their life, for the way that Jesus sees them, because he thought it was worth giving it all up for them. Not just to them through their circumstances, not just because of their circumstances but despite their issues and problems.

Updated (08/11) : Kyle Lake

I heard about the death of emergent leader and baptist pastor Kyle Lake and felt like I had to write something if not only to give you some links to help you join in mourning his loss, celebrating his life and supporting his family. Things like this shake me, even when there people we dont know, young people, full of gifts, with a whole family dying, it brings us back to "Who can know the mind of God" and in that place, when we know his presence there is a freedom that comes from our revelation of his love for us, and we stop asking why and have to say Thankyou....(UPDATE2: Relevant has just published an article around Kyles Death and this subject http://www.relevantmagazine.com/life_article.php?id=7058) Personally though he is only somebody I know of, from reading things of his life and passing I feel really saddened by this tragic accident but also led to celebrate his life: This was the release on the UBC Home Page "This morning, Sunday October 30th, our pastor Kyle Lake was involved in an accident during a baptism and was transported by EMS to a nearby hospital. Kyle Lake passed away around 11:30am. Not only did we lose a pastor but we've lost our friend. " Here is the Story of how Kyle died as told by Baptist Press http://www.bpnews.net/bpnews.asp?ID=21976 Here is the MP3/Podcast from his funeral http://www.ubcwaco.org/2004/KyleLakeFuneral64.mp3 Here is an excerpt from Kyles last sermon a friend emailed me Live. And Live Well.BREATHE. Breathe in and Breathe deeply. Be PRESENT. Do not be past. Do not be future. Be now.On a crystal clear, breezy 70 degree day, roll down the windows and FEEL the wind against your skin. Feel the warmth of the sun.If you run, then allow those first few breaths on a cool Autumn day to FREEZE your lungs and do not just be alarmed, be ALIVE.Get knee-deep in a novel and LOSE track of time.If you bike, pedal HARD… and if you crash then crash well.Feel the SATISFACTION of a job well done—a paper well-written, a project thoroughly completed, a play well-performed.If you must wipe the snot from your 3-year old’s nose, don’t be disgusted if the Kleenex didn’t catch it all… because soon he’ll be wiping his own.If you’ve recently experienced loss, then GRIEVE. And Grieve well.At the table with friends and family, LAUGH. If you’re eating and laughing at the same time, then might as well laugh until you puke. And if you eat, then SMELL. The aromas are not impediments to your day. Steak on the grill, coffee beans freshly ground, cookies in the oven. And TASTE. Taste every ounce of flavor. Taste every ounce of friendship. Taste every ounce of Life. Because-it-is-most-definitely-a-Gift. http://www.ubcwaco.org/2004/sermonexcerpt.html This was taken from the DCB Websites article ''Death is swallowed up in victory...We Win!'' http://www.davidcrowderband.com/news/articles.php3?id=000178 Many of you have inquired about ways to help. Currently, there are two main ways that the family has advocated: a) Donations to a fund that is currently being established as a memorial for Kyle. The Memorial fund is a scholarship fund for the children and to provide for family needs. We are able to take contributions to this immediately. Please make your check payable to University Baptist Church, and on the “Memo” line note: “Kyle Lake Memorial.” b) Donations to University Baptist Church directly, which may be made through the PayPal link at the bottom of this page or as a check to 1701 Dutton Ave., Waco, TX 76706 (all mail will be forwarded to a business PO Box that is being obtained).More than anything, we truly covet your prayers during these trying times. We’ve lost an amazing leader and we’re relying on support from both within and outside of the UBC community as we try to move forward. UPDATE1: This really great interview I just found on the Leadership Blog I think really clearly displays Kyles Character: http://leadershipblog.blogspot.com/2005/10/leadership-blog-interview-kyle-lake.html Keep up to date with things on http://www.ubcwaco.org/kyle/

Everyone is getting Married!

You know your getting Old when: - Your best friends younger brother rings you up and tells you he's engaged - Congrats Jake and Beth - People your own age are getting married - Hope to be there Morgana and John - People only slightly older than you, settled down (or the opposite) get married - Nice one Beth and Jeff, you guys rock Heres to Bachelors, sitting in arm chairs at the age of 60, smoking a pipe and pickling themselves with good quality bourbon

My Crazy Life, and the end of a short era

I have had a very hectic week!...But slogged through it nicely, 2 Assignments, 1 Class Presentation, 1 Teaching session later, I am still alive. Today I go for my last shift at Tesco (UK Supermarket) In the last few weeks I have loathed going in, but also loved meeting people outside my regular bubble of life. It also showed me how effective you can be in the work place, as this is the first work place I have been really intentionally missional, I have seen some really cool things. I prayed for one of my friends bad backs and it got better, and I got to invite a bunch of people to church, and represent Christianity or at least Jesus to some people. You sound pretty pleased with yourself I hear you say...well, I ve enjoyed being there in lots of ways but I think as opposed to being any testimony for my goodness, it actually is a great testimony and stepping out a little and God blessing that. So heres to Tesco, to pulling cages of products over your toe, getting too cold in the dairy department, sharing jokes with the checkout staff, inhaling passive smoke in the refectory.

The Blog Problem - A Boring, exaplanatory post!

While Im enjoying using blogger, this blog takes some keeping up, and thats before all the blogging! So I cam seriously considering TypePad...what do you think? Anyway Also I realise that alot of you who are not big blog readers and even those of you who are, dont read more than the top post. Well Ive been busy (as ever) and so I havent blogged good stuff for about a week. But Internet is now TRULY on its way at home, as we got the wireless set up and now were just waiting on Tiscali. But until then feel free to get your self a Free iPod on me...hehe unrepentant in trying to get referrals. Promise Good blogging will return within a week or so.
